What is ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION

INTRODUCTION

This phenomenon of generating current/ e.m.f. by changing h magnetic fields is called Electromagnetic Induction (EMI). The e.m.f. so developed is called induced e.m.f. if the conductor is in the form of a closed circuit, a current flow in the circuit. This is called induced current.

This phenomenon of EMI is the basis of working of power generators, dynamos, transfer etc. we cannot imagine a world where there is no electricity, no lights, no trains telephones, no personal computers and nothing that works on electricity. Therefore, the phenomenon of EMI is not merely of theoretical or academic interest. The present day civilisation owes a great deal to the discovery of the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction.

UNITS OF MAGNETIC FLUX

The SI unit of magnetic flux is Weber (Wb). One Weber is the amount of magnetic flux over an area of 1 metre2 held normal to a uniform magnetic field of one tesla.
