Hibernation is a period of dormancy during which the metabolic activities are reduced to minimum.
The body temperature, pulse and heart beat are also decreased. It is a kind of adaptation by animals by which they are able to survive through severe winter months.
The hibernating animal find a safe, warm place to spend the winter. It eats as much food as it can find, becomes very fat and then goes off to sleep.
During hibernation its body uses very little energy as the metabolic activities are reduced to a minimum. all the reserved energy is used up during their inactive state of hibernation and a thin and hungry animal wakes up in Spring. Polar bear, squirrels, frog etc. are known to hibernate.
