During the early voyages, many seamen died of an unknown disease which is now known as scurvy. People thought it was some kind of curse on the seamen which was killing them.
Actually the sailors died due to the deficiency of Vitamin C which was absent in their tinned food.
It was James Cook, a famous Explorer, who first realised that eating fresh fruits could prevent Scurvy. He carried citrus fruits like lemon, oranges and pickled cabbage on his voyage to the South Pacific in 1768.
